University CoursesBig DataDatabase

Introduction

Graduate-level course on the design and implementation of (relational) database system kernels, as well as other large-scale data management techniques and systems. Review the relational data model (including relational algebra) and relational query language: SQL. Examine in depth file organization, database storage, indexing and hashing, query evaluation and optimization, transaction processing, concurrency control and recovery, database integrity and security.

Highlights

  • Covers the principles of designing and implementing database kernels
  • Investigates latest development in other large-scale data management techniques and systems, e.g., MapReduce, NoSQL, Key-Value stores, in-memory computing
  • Includes a semester-long project to build a mini-database system

Recommendation

This course is recommended for graduate students interested in the principles of database system design and implementation, as well as other large-scale data management techniques. It provides a deep dive into the core components of database systems and the latest developments in the field.
